Dynamic Earth time desktop

Posted in Images by mvasilakis 2898 days ago

I stumbled on this site here And used the info to create a dynamic earth desktop background. After playing some more with the documentation for xplanet I got a nice little moon with the current phase rendered.

I posted allot of the code I used in the rendering here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=13976879&postcount=3389

The gas buddy script is here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=13097794&postcount=3083

The crossfit script is here http://xtacocorex-geektool-scripts.googlecode.com/files/crossfitgetwodv1.2.py and the info to use it here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=13325664&postcount=3210

The rest I pretty much got here :)

Has anyone been able to recreate this? I spent 3 hours yesterday trying and was very annoyed when it did not work. Some of the instructions seem a bit vague as to where the code is to be typed in.... I could just be really missing it, but I really would love to have this as my background I just cannot seem to make it work. :( HELP!!!

I'm the original poster. Let me know where you had issue and I'll do my best to explain.

Here are links to the shell files I used:

Place these in your /Users/userename/xplanet directory

(Change USERNAME to your username in this one)

fetch clouds script

(This one I modified several times since I keep having problems downloading the clouds on one laptop. I think this version works best. so far...)

Also in your /Users/username/xplanet directory you will need:

day.jpg night.jpg earthspec.jpg earthbump.jpg and cloud.jpg (from the links provided on the other site)

I believe thats all you need provided you installed macports, wget, xplanet and imagemagick properly.

If I get a couple hours free at some point I'll write comprehensive instructions on how to get it to work start to finish.

You may also want to consider downloading one of the images rendered here every hour: (not as cool as doing it yourself but the result is pretty much the same)
